Drug Treatment Center Finder > Alaska
Juneau, Alaska and the surrounding cities have many drug rehab programs and drug and alcohol treatment centers. Most often, they probably think of Igloos or the movie “Into the Wild.” They probably know that it’s between Russia and Canada. It’s also the largest, yet least densely populated state (probably because it’s so cold!). Alaska became part of the US in 1867, when the United States bought it from Russia. The sale cost $7.2 million. Now, Alaska faces drug and alcohol problems whose cost is in the billions!
The rate of illicit drug use in Alaska is 50% higher than the national average. It has been the number one state in the country for marijuana use, as well as use of other drugs such as cocaine and heroin. In fact, heroin and opiate painkillers are quickly becoming a problem in Alaska.

Alaska’s primary drug of choice is not something that can be smoked or snorted or shot. It is not a powder or a plant. In fact, it is alcohol. To many people, alcohol does not register as a “drug.” Yet, anyone who’s known an alcoholic can attest to the damage they do. Alcoholics drink to excess, becoming violent, erratic and sometimes suicidal. The problem is so bad that many areas of Alaska have sought to prohibit the sale of alcohol. This has led to an underground bootlegging industry that continues to feed Alaska’s addiction.
When it comes to illicit drugs, Juneau, Alaska is known to smoke marijuana. It accounts for two-thirds of illegal drug use and about 27% of admissions into Alaska’s’s treatment centers. Although it may not be viewed as such, marijuana is a potentially dangerous drug. It is a “gateway drug,” which means that it has the potential to escalate drug use to substances such as cocaine and heroin. Marijuana is also habit-forming in and of itself. Its sedating and euphoric effect leads to self-medication for serious psychological issues, such as depression or anxiety.
It goes without saying that drug addiction is ugly. It hurts everyone it touches, not least of all the addict himself or herself. Once drug users are hooked, they will do anything for their next fix. They lie, cheat and steal. It is not uncommon to do things that no rational person would dream of, such as burglary or prostitution.
If you or someone you know has a problem with drugs or alcohol, don’t wait to get help! Call 877-968-6682 today!
