Ryan Knight

MTV’s Ryan Knight Dies from Apparent Drug Overdose

If you are a fan of MTV’s hit prime time shows The Real World or The Challenge, then chances you are that you have probably heard of the recent loss of Diem Brown to ovarian cancer earlier in November.

But even more recent is the sudden, tragic loss of Ryan Knight to an apparent overdose of prescription medication after the reality TV star was found dead by friends on Thanksgiving morning after a long night of partying. He was reported to have choked on his own vomit while unconscious.

MTV released the following statement: “We are saddened to hear the news of the passing of Ryan Knight. Our thoughts and condolences are with his family and friends at this difficult time.”

A toxicology report is currently pending and an autopsy performed the day after his death showed no physical signs of injury.

Knight, was well known for his season of the Real World: New Orleans as one of the seven strangers picked to live in the city back in 2010. He had confessed that his season on the show kept him away from an addiction that he had carried for years after becoming addicted to painkillers prescribed from injuries.

He previously told Kenosha News:

“They prescribed it, and I kind of got too much of it . It is crazy how available it is.”

The public news of Ryan Knight’s death due to prescription drugs mixed with alcohol is not a new story. Stars including Whitney Houston, Heath Ledger, Michael Jackson and Anna Nicole Smith are also all thought to have died due to the deadly combination or overdose involving sedatives, painkillers, sedatives and stimulants in combination with alcohol. According to the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, “alcohol can make a medication less effective or even useless, or it may make the medication harmful or toxic to your body.”

This is not the first time that addiction has been brought to light as a point of focus for The Real World or The Challenge. Housemate and former-partier, Ruthie Alcaide was shown struggling with alcoholism on her season of The Real World: Hawaii. During her season, her alcohol addiction was so prevalent that production conducted an intervention urging her to go to rehab or leave the show. Ruthie went on to successfully seek treatment to return and was later featured on a following season of The Challenge in recovery and sober.

These days, a much healthier Ruthie works to spread alcohol addiction awareness.

The recent news of Knight’s death illustrates the unfortunate ending to a long battle with addiction. The disease progresses sometimes quickly, sometimes slowly but always leads to a certain impending loss of everything. If you or someone you know is struggling with addiction, we urge you to ask for help.
