Finding a Treatment Center: 4 Things to Consider

Sean Levine wrote this in Treatment on Thursday, July 17, 2014

When you’re looking for a treatment center, it can be overwhelming to see the laundry list of services they provide. All you want is to recover from your addiction; you might not care about yoga, exercise or equine therapy (maybe you’re thinking, “what the heck is equine therapy anyways!?”). In your mind, treatment centers only have to offer one service: recovery from addiction. So, how can you navigate your way through all the thousands of treatment centers throughout the nation? Here are a few tips for narrowing down your search:

  • Detox: For an addict, detoxing at a treatment center is never a bad idea. No matter what drugs you were addicted to, detox is ALWAYS uncomfortable or even painful. When it comes to alcohol, benzodiazepines, and heroin, detox can be deadly. For instance, delirium tremens that can accompany alcohol withdrawal have a 35% chance of killing you if you’re not treated by a doctor.
  • Inpatient vs. Outpatient: Inpatient treatment centers provide a more structured and supervised environment for the recovering addict, so they’re always ideal. However, outpatient might be more realistic for people who have demanding jobs or other responsibilities. Say, for example, that you’re a single parent and no one else can take your kids to school or pick them up. Outpatient can allow you to receive treatment in between these responsibilities.
  • Location: Many addicts might want to stay close to home for the reasons mentioned above. However, it can also help to get away from home, away from your stressors and temptations. Also, some locations provide an embedded recovery community that many addicts find helpful. Countless addicts go to Florida drug treatment centers, where they’re surrounded by literally hundreds of meetings per day and thousands of other recovering addicts.
  • Approach to Recovery: Most treatment centers find the 12 step approach to recovery to be most beneficial. However, many might approach addiction from an additional or completely different perspective. For example, countless alcoholic Christians have utilized Christian recovery and treatment centers. There, they rediscover the faith that they’d lost in addiction as they attend Mass and receive the sacraments. Other spiritual minded addicts seek holistic treatment centers with services such as yoga and meditation.
