New Hampshire ranks among the highest states for drug use. These drugs have proven themselves deadly, killing more people than either guns or car accidents. In fact, drugs kill more people in New Hampshire than most other states. Prescription medications, which are most often painkillers, are responsible for the vast majority of drug-related deaths in New Hampshire. At 15%, New Hampshire also has the highest rate for non-medical use of painkillers among young adults. These facts reveal that one particular type of drug is behind much of New Hampshire’s problem: opiates.

Opiates, which include heroin and pharmaceutical painkillers, make up the bulk of New Hampshire’s drug addiction. Altogether, they account for about two-thirds of the state’s admissions to treatment centers. Especially common are painkillers such as oxycodone, which is sold as Percocet, OxyContin and Roxicodone. Though sometimes perceived as safe because they are “legal,” these drugs are highly addictive and dangerous. They are especially lethal when ingested with other drugs such as alcohol.

America’s prescription drug epidemic has led to many efforts to regulate painkillers and discourage their abuse. However, these efforts have not cured New Hampshire of its drug addiction problems. Instead, opiate addicts now turn to heroin. Like other opiates, heroin creates a potent high that quickly leads to addiction. However, unlike other opiates, heroin is often “cut” with other dangerous drugs, making quality impossible to control. Users often overdose more easily because they overestimate their tolerance or aren’t aware of what they are injecting. Between 2012 and 2014, heroin-related deaths in New Hampshire doubled.

Drug addiction destroys lives every day, but it doesn’t need to destroy yours. If you or someone you know has a drug or alcohol problem, call 877-968-6682 and get help today!
