GET TREATMENT IN THE HAWKEYE STATE, ONE OF THE SAFEST STATES TO LIVE

For many people, the first thing to come to mind when thinking about the state of Iowa is either “political caucuses” or “corn,” but there’s a lot more going on in this Midwestern state than one might think.

Writers from all over the country and the world compete to land a spot in the Iowa Writers’ Workshop at the University of Iowa, one of the most prestigious writing programs that gave opportunities to famous authors like Flannery O’Connor and Kurt Vonnegut Jr. Baseball fans go to the Field of Dreams in Dyersville, Iowa, to stand on the acclaimed baseball diamond.

Nature lovers explore the caverns of the Maquoketa Caves State Park, which contains more caves than other state parks, as well as hike along Iowa’s river borders, the Mississippi River on the east and the Missouri and the Big Sioux rivers on the west.

Clients who go to rehab in Iowa may also see the Lewis and Clark Monument in Council Bluffs, a major city of southwest Iowa, and take inspiration to their own self-exploration. Drug treatment in Iowa is an all-effort affair, with the state showing some of the lowest illicit substance abuse rates in the country (second-lowest according to the 2013-2014 National Survey on Drug Use and Health) and with greater improvement in coming down on illicit drug production, such as for methamphetamine.

Anyone looking to get drug treatment in Iowa can get in touch with pastoral America, enjoying the likes of hometown farmers markets, Midwestern charm, and a literal breath of fresh air from the various wind turbine farms around the state. Drugs Most Commonly Abused in Iowa

The Iowa Governor’s Office of Drug Control Policy has been making great strides to reduce the rate of alcohol and illicit drug use, and have seen great improvement within two decades. Yet, as with every annual report, the state of Iowa can always make improvement on spreading substance abuse awareness and advocating for drug treatment programs.

The following drugs, listed in order of primary use, have shown the highest trends of drug abuse in Iowa:

  • Alcohol
  • Marijuana
  • Methamphetamine
  • Synthetic drugs
  • Cocaine
  • Heroin and other opiates

Unlike the rest of the United States, where a heroin epidemic is running rampant across the nation, the primary illicit substance of abuse in Iowa has been methamphetamine. At the height of the meth epidemic in Iowa, there were 1,500 meth labs being reported across the state. Since then, meth labs have gone down 90 percent, reporting 135 labs in 2016.

Iowa’s treatment for meth use ranks 11th in the United States, but overall illicit drug use remains low in Iowa, with the state having the second-lowest rate of illicit drug use and 13th-lowest rate of prescription drug abuse in the United States, according to the 2013-2014 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH).

However, while illicit drug use rates may be low in Iowa, the opposite is true for alcohol abuse. Both Iowa’s underage and binge drinking rates exceed the national average, with 21.4 percent of Iowans aged 18 or older reporting binge drinking in 2014, compared to the national average of 16 percent. Heavy drinking rates across the state is also higher than the nation (6.3 percent in Iowa versus 5.9 percent nationally).
