Virginia is no stranger to local drug problems and the opioid epidemic has made it’s mark on the state. However, this has caused drug treatment professionals to rise to the challenge of helping both state residents and visitors overcome addiction.

Commonly Abused Drugs in Virginia

There are all sorts of addictive drugs, both legal and illegal, that can lead to dependence and addiction. In Virginia, commonly abused drugs include:

  • Prescription drugs (including fentanyl)
  • Heroin
  • Marijuana
  • Alcohol

Virginia’s public health crisis is related to drug addiction, specifically opioid addiction, which, in 2014, claimed more lives through overdoses than fatal car accidents. Virginia was also one of the states with statistically significant increases in the rate of drug overdose deaths in 2013 to 2014, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In 2016, State Health Commissioner Marissa J. Levine officially declared opioid addiction a public health emergency in Virginia.

The state cited the following statistics to illustrate the depth of the problem:

  • Emergency department visits for heroin overdose for January-September 2016 increased 89% compared to the same nine month period in 2015.
  • The total number of fatal drug overdoses in Virginia during the first half of 2016 has increased 35% when compared to the same time period in 2015.
  • Fatal drug overdoses became the number one method of unnatural death in 2013.
  • The rate of reported cases of Hepatitis C (HCV) increased 28% between 2010 and 2015, with the primary risk factor being injection drug use.

Recent sales of carfentanil, a sedative used to tranquilize large animals, in the Tidewater region of the state, has health officials concerned as that drug is 100 times more potent than fentanyl, which is also deadly. Also, in 2016, Levine issued a naloxone statewide standing order that authorizes pharmacists with a current active pharmacist license to dispense naloxone to Virginians for emergencies that arise. The initiative aims to save lives from drug overdoses.
