“Shatter”ing the Cycle

The Port St. Lucie Police Special Investigation Division has busted 23-year-old David Enrique Tisheh for a second time in the manufacturing and distribution of a marijuana derivative known widely as “shatter”. On June 25th, numerous jars of the waxy substance made by extracting cannabis oil from marijuana were seized from a small home in a residential Port St. Lucie neighborhood, belonging to the grandmother of the suspect. Due to the highly combustible components used in making “shatter”, investigating police were advised to wear protective gear in case of any unexpected explosions.

Introduced into the drug market two to three years ago, “shatter” – also known as “honey wax”, “honey oil”, “earwax”, “dabs”, or “butter” – is just now starting to gain popularity. Far more potent than marijuana alone, “shatter” boasts a THC content of 80 to 90 percent – four times more THC than the most potent strains of high-quality marijuana. Aside from the comparative strength, “shatter” is attractive to users based on the fact that it is both odorless and smokeless. Many knowledgeable and dedicated stoners would undoubtedly argue that hash oil (“shatter”) has been obtainable and prevalent since the 1960’s. However, the new and progressively more perilous ways in which the drug is being produced remains the main issue of concern amongst authorities.

Additionally, the newfound pervasiveness of “shatter” is expected to continue rising in accordance with the noted drug trends of the recent past. Methamphetamine was introduced into contemporary drug culture, abused, and found to be highly lethal and otherwise physically destructive. Heroin then began to take the spotlight, yet the heroin trend is now beginning to fade as addicts are seeking recovery and general awareness is being emphasized. Perhaps “shatter” will soon take the place of heroin and become part of the seemingly endless cycle. Or perhaps, if preventative measures are continuously taken before “shatter” gains irreversible popularity, an end can be put the cyclical archetype of experimentation and addiction.
