Outpatient Treatment

Outpatient-TherapyOutpatient treatment is therapy undertaken outside of a monitored environment. One of the most well-known examples of outpatient treatment is attending Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous meetings.

Outpatient treatment is not as effective in dealing with addiction as compared to inpatient treatment, but it can be effective for many. One of the biggest advantages of outpatient treatment is that it’s far less expensive than inpatient treatment, and many end up choosing this route due to cost concerns alone. The quality of treatment is generally at the same high level as inpatient treatment, but this method requires more discipline on the part of the addict and support from friends and family.

Benefits of outpatient treatment include:

  • No interruption to normal daily activities. While engaged in outpatient treatment, addicts can raise a family, go to school, and continue work. For some, the major interruption that inpatient treatment causes to daily life can be an obstacle.
  • No need to explain prolonged absences. There is shame involved with addiction, and many addicts do not want to have to explain a long-term absence to others, for fear of ruining their reputation. This is particularly true with “closet addicts” where nobody, other than the most intimate of companions, knows about the addiction.
  • Loved ones can be involved much quicker with recovery. If the addict has a strong support network dedicated to helping with recovery, that network will be able to participate on a real-time basis. Outpatient treatment has no “isolation period” that is common with inpatient treatment.

The major drawback to outpatient treatment is the lack of a monitored and controlled environment. In an inpatient treatment clinic, the patient is concentrating on recovery and nothing else, whereas in outpatient, they are still dealing with the trappings of everyday life. These stresses can hit “emotional triggers” which can cause relapse.

However, for individuals who are on a budget, outpatient treatment is often the only realistic choice, and it can be effective if the addict is dedicated to it. Outpatient treatment is generally not recommended to individuals where an intervention is staged since often the addict is going through therapy unwillingly, at least at first.

If the addict is committed to recovery, outpatient treatments can provide a cost-friendly alternative to inpatient treatment that doesn’t require a complete life interruption.
