No one likes admitting to addictions. It is often considered a sign of weakness, even when it may be out of a person’s control. However, porn addiction is one of those addictions many people simply deny altogether, since it cannot only represent weakness but also be a point of shame, though a huge number of people don’t view watching porn as a bad thing. The morality aside, porn addiction is a serious problem.
Whether or not pornography is right or wrong, it can become an addiction that seriously affects relationships. The recent movie Don Jon is an exploration of the way that one man’s addiction to porn makes him incapable to finding any true sexual fulfillment in his relationships, as all of his expectations for sex are skewed. Despite being a Hollywood portrayal, the movie does a fairly good job of capturing the essential issue.
Men and women who are addicted to porn have unrealistic expectations of what sexual relationships should be, and so are left unfulfilled in their sexual experiences. Thus, they rely upon porn. Their brain has become accustomed to certain levels of endorphins, and the only way of supplying those is through looking at pornography.
When this addiction can become very serious is when relationships with a spouse are ruined because a person values porn over his or her real-life relationship. The spouse feels undervalued, and perhaps with good reason: he or she is being passed over in favor of virtual means of satisfaction. It is also possible for the addict to reach a point in which he or she has to watch porn so often that it interferes with work, and in some cases, the addiction can lead to unemployment.
Watching large amounts of porn can also lead to a certain amount of tolerance, so the addict needs more and more extreme videos or pictures to achieve the same feelings. A habit that started as looking at one or two pictures of naked bodies may eventually become a need to watch videos involving multiple people, and more time will be consumed by watching pornography.
Another problem being linked to pornography addiction is erectile dysfunction. The reasons are essentially those mentioned above: the addicts developed a tolerance, and could no longer be satisfied by the stimulations of a normal sexual experience.
