Florida Model of Addiction Treatment

What is the Florida Model of Addiction Treatment?

Years of research and study have led to the enlightened understanding of alcohol and drug addiction as a disease. More specifically, addiction is a chronic, progressive disease of the brain, causing individuals to obsessively, compulsively relapse back to harmful behaviors. Most commonly associated with substance abuse, addiction often begins as curiosity about recreational intoxication. However, in some the experimentation takes hold, becoming increasingly central to an individual’s life while reaping a number of effects.

In addition to the extensive impact that habitual substance abuse has on an individual’s physical health, alcohol and drug dependency causes a number of psychological and behavioral changes that can result in the loss of one’s job, damaging or destroying important relationships, and even criminal behavior as a means of sustaining a substance abuse habit. In short, addiction is progressively transformative, turning even those with great potential and aspirations into individuals whose every day revolves around seeking and consuming harmful, dangerous, mind-altering substances.

Although we know the disease to be incurable, the many effects and symptoms of addiction can be mitigated and even alleviated by addiction treatment programs that consist of numerous effective, evidence-based therapies. As the path to addiction and the diseases are highly variable among individuals, the treatment of alcohol and drug dependency is an incredibly variable process as well. Recovery from addiction is a process that is personalized according to how each individual has developed and been affected by his or her addiction.

While many of the individual treatments tend to be included in a number of programs, there are several different treatment modalities; choosing one model of treatment over another means identifying which type of treatment best addresses an individual’s recovery needs. One form of treatment that has been popular and highly publicized in recent years is referred to as the Florida model of addiction treatment. The following will give a concise overview of this unique form of recovery programming and detail how it can be beneficial to those who suffer from chemical dependency.

The Florida Model of Treatment: What Is It?

In the 1970s and 1980s, the United States was experiencing a spike in recreational drug use. Naturally, the high rates of alcohol and drug abuse resulted in high rates of addiction with there being more and more people with a disease in need of treatment. In Florida, a number of recovering addicts began opening their own treatment operations with the weather and beaches being an enticing recovery environment, especially from those from more northern states.

As the years progressed, the need for more addiction treatments grew with the influx of people developing and suffering from addiction and deciding to head to South Florida for treatment. And not only was the locale enticing but having so many rehabs in an area gave individuals a selection from which they could choose, finding the treatments that best addressed their needs. In only a few decades, Florida has come to be known informally as the recovery capital of the western hemisphere and offers a very strong support network to those in recovery.

With an increasing number of treatment centers opening in a relatively small geographical region, a pattern emerged in the treatment curricula of the South Florida treatment centers. Due partly to Florida’s popularity as a vacation destination, many treatment facilities in Florida offer a more resort or campus-like atmosphere rather than the clinical setting of facilities located elsewhere.

There are a number of Florida treatment centers that even house different components of treatment in separate buildings with individuals traveling between buildings for their treatments like they would on a college campus. Additionally, the living arrangements at Florida rehabs tend to have more amenities included in the accommodations with some even offering each resident his or her own kitchen and laundry facilities. In terms of treatment, the Florida model is a stepped model that begins with more intense, structured programming and becomes less structured as individuals progress through their recoveries.

Benefits of the Florida Model of Addiction Treatment & Recovery

The Florida model of treatment affords individuals more accommodating living environments, which also serves the purpose of helping them to learn how to maintain a clean, organized living space. Over the course of addiction, many addicts fall into financial ruin and sometimes even homelessness, making it important to learn this kind of personal responsibility in order to successful transition back into the community after treatment.

In addition to maintaining one’s living space, the Florida model emphasizes the importance of many other life skills such as nutrition and learning to cook, grocery shopping, balancing one’s finances, doing laundry, and so on.

While one aspect of the Florida model emphasizes personal responsibility and life skills, the other component is actual treatment. As with any other effective recovery program, the core of the Florida model is counseling and cognitive behavioral therapy, which helps individuals identify the contributing factors to the development of their addictions as well as learning ways to sustain lasting recovery.

An important part of treatment is participating in group sessions as well, helping individuals to develop their social and communication skills. Florida rehabs often offer a variety of holistic and alternative treatments in order to supplement psychotherapy, addressing more of the individual effects of alcohol and drug addiction.
